The Texas High School Coaches Association recently inducted Robert Brown into its Hall of Honor. Coach Brown said, “This is the pinnacle of honors in high school football.”
The former Texas Southern standout coached multiple sports in a career that spanned four decades. He mentored future NFL running back Joseph Addai during a brief stint at Sharpstown. In 1966, he led M.C. Williams to a district football championship.
Coach Brown also coached baseball, basketball, and track. He retired in 2002.
Texas Southern Football Career Influenced Coaching
He donned the pads with many future NFL players at Texas Southern, including Pro Football Hall of Fame member Winston Hill and Oakland Raiders star Warren Wells.
He stated that Wells influenced his coaching. “When I started coaching, I would use some of the techniques Warren brought with him. And oh man, it worked.”
PVIL Legacy
Coach Brown’s high school athletic career started with one year at Galveston Central before blossoming at Lincoln High School in La Marque. Both schools were members of the Prairie View Interscholastic League (PVIL). The PVIL stood as the governing body in athletics for Texas’ African American schools during segregation.
He now works tirelessly to keep the PVIL’s legacy alive, serving as the Chairman of the Board of the Prairie View Interscholastic League Coaches Association. The organization hosts an annual Hall of Fame banquet that helps keep the PVIL community connected and its history preserved.

Coach Brown travelled a long road to the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor. He encouraged other inductees to cherish the moment when their time comes.
